Recent studies from the University of Southern California and the University of Washington found that chronic exposure to air pollution increases a baby's chance of developing bronchiolitis -- a lung infection that is the most common cause of hospitalizations in the first year of life – and asthma. Air pollution has also been linked with heart problems in older children and adults.
There are actions parents can take to protect their children’s lungs.
|
• As much as possible, choose homes, schools and daycares away from major roads with lots of traffic;
• Clear the air! Parents can eliminate smoking inside the house and limit fireplace use to special occasions; and
• Since motor vehicle use causes most of our air pollution, we can all reduce our contribution to unhealthy air by driving less to give our cars and lungs a rest.

Maintaining healthy air quality in our community will reduce medical costs and improve our quality of life.
